She clearly prefers to be inside. We had a little setback today, as she protested going out in the rain to go potty. She usually bolts out the door with the other dogs, but today, she froze at the threshold of the doorway, contemplating if it was worth it to go outside. She really just rolls over, belly up at the slightest thing. This had actually made for peaceful interactions between her and my rambunctious boys. She is still a puppy though, and every time I let her out the door she runs from one dog to the other to get them to play. Seamus usually takes her up on the offer, and they play tug with the rope toys often.

She gets along equally as well with her human foster family. Yesterday, she got out of her crate (I left door unlatched,) after a nap, and came right to me in another room. I was folding clothes and when I went to place something in a basket, I looked down to find Poppy sitting there, just watching me. Happy as could be. She didn't even have an accident, and then we went outside were she did her business and ran back inside. She has gone two days without an accident in the house. She was a little shy at first, but quickly warmed up. She is a sweet dog, and her puppy antics are fun to watch. She has meet so many new people, and even walked to pick up the kids from school on a leash. When people meet her, they can't keep their hands off of her, and she is really enjoying that. (With warnings to wash their hands, as she has just a tad bit of a cough left from a respiratory illness she is recovering from.) She is a tad bit gentler than some puppies I have fostered. She is not as mouthy, but she is obviously still a puppy and loves to chew objects.
She is enjoying her new foster dog brothers. She jumps on them and chases them, and plays tug with the toy rope with Seamus (an australian shepherd.)
She is working on her housebreaking, and really understands how to get down to business outside so she can get right back in the house. :) She is great in the crate, and sleeps there all night now. The first night here she had a hard time being separated from her little mates, though she made most of the night just fine alone in her crate. A few hours before morning, after a quick potty break {{{yawn}}} she just came into bed and slept with her foster mommy until it was time to get up. She didn't need to do that last night, and made the whole evening in the crate.
We look forward to getting to know her better, and finding her a forever home too!

New Foster Homes for Two Weeks!

Some of the other rescue group fosters are stepping in to help the girls while our backyard is being worked on. I ran up to get them from the vet where they had been dropped off after rescue and quickly dropped them unceremoniously off at home with some food and water so that we wouldn't be late for his birthday dinner reservations. When we got home from dinner, we got our first good look at them: scared, scrawny, wormy, and starving. They appeared to be quite afraid of us and everything else and seemed to have had minimal socialization. We knew we would have our work cut out for us!

That first night they were ravenously hungry. They seemed insatiable! After lots of food and water, we sent them outside with the other dogs to relieve themselves for a last time before bed. A few minutes later, we went to bring everyone in... and couldn't find the girls!!! All of the other dogs were ready to come in, but the new pups had vanished from the yard. Jason and I set out with flashlights and canned food into the dark, cold night to search for them. Iris & Tulip were found rather quickly rummaging in the garage, but we could not find Violet & Poppy until an hour later when we came in and left some food "bait" in the partially open garage. What a relief when we finally had them in our arms again!!!

As soon as we had them all back safe and sound, we weighed them all, gave them baths, worming treatment, and put collars and tags on them in case they should get loose again. What a scary adventure for their first night!!! We decided to look ahead to the day when they were no longer scared to be in a home with a family and gave them spring flower names in anticipation of that time.

Over the last 12 days the girls have come a LONG way! They have each gained 3-4 pounds (!!!) and become much happier to be with us. They love all of the other dogs and play readily with anyone, any time. They still love their food, but they have relaxed in the knowledge that more is always available. They are now crate trained and working on housebreaking. In the coming weeks they will begin on basic obedience and home manners. They are sweet and beautiful puppies who are sure to make a wonderful addition to some lucky family!
